When To Use The Dice Bot

Actions That Involve Acute Senses

Otherwise known as a 'Perception Check' in some tabletop systems. All characters must complete a successful roll to use heightened/unnatural senses while interaction with another person, object, or environment. For example: Linda is attempting to follow Sam without being detected. If Sam wishes to use his senses to determine -why- he feels paranoid, he rolls to see if he was successful in catching her. Successful roll = Sam notices Linda. Failed roll = Sam remains unaware that Linda is following him.

Actions That Require Skill (Mental & Physical)

Your character is attempting to accomplish something that the every day, mundane human cannot do without appropriate training. Yes, magic falls into this category, as do non-magical skills. Example: Your wish to scale a building with your bare hands. With each progressive action, you need to roll the dice to determine if you are successful. No, you CANNOT scale an entire building in one post. Expect to write out the series of events that gets you from the ground to the roof through multiple paragraphs. Yes, a success roll is required for each part of the series. Successful roll = Your character continues scaling the building and making progress. Unsuccessful roll = Your character begins to slip and lose his grip. Another Unsuccessful Roll = Your character falls. Use your judgment and be realistic!!!!

Actions Forced On Another Character Without Inflicting Damage (Mental & Physical)

Your character decides to play a prank on another character or perhaps a weapon is pressed to another character without inflicting harm....yet. This will require a roll for success by the attacker. If successful, the victim is allowed to roll for defense. Successful Defense Roll = Character has freedom to make one action that will defend him/her against the attack.  Failed Defense Roll = Character must accept the attacker's post as reality in their response post.

NOTE: Your character cannot force a character to feel differently about a person or situation without the use of a power set indicated in a profile. For example, you cannot force a character to feel rage towards another character without the use of a spell or compulsion that is appropriately listed as a power within your profile. This must make sense for your character race, and as always, targeted characters are allowed to roll for defense.

Combat/Fighting (Mental & Physical)

When two characters engage in combat, the use of Offense dice rolls, Defense dice rolls, and Damage dice rolls are required. This is explained in depth further down the page.

The Dice System Explained

Mithrendain is a mixture of free-form paragraph roleplay and a codified dice system. Why? Every day interaction/existence of characters uses the free-form paragraph system. When conflict arises or characters attempt to achieve something that requires skill or luck, the use of the dice system prevents god-moding.

How To Use The Dice Bot

Dice Command

Without any spaces, simply enter the following (indicated below in purple) into the blank text field used for posting:

roll d100

You will see the dice bot response in the chatroom as follows:

<dicebot> Sam rolled : d100 --> [ 1d100=32]{32}

The 'Dice Chart' will explain what type of dice you need to roll. This is determined by character level and type of action (offense or defense).

Offense Command (Rolled By The Attacker):

roll d100

Defense Command (Rolled By The Defender):

roll d100

How Do I Know What Level My Opponent Is?

All registered characters are listed in the character gallery on the website with their current character level. Stats are also listed for each character under the forums here.If you have questions, you may feel free to speak to a host. If you do not see your opponent listed on the website, it is assumed the opponent still needs to be added to the website by the GMs or is not registered and is therefore a Level 1 character by default.

The Dice Chart is organized based on character level. The required dice for each form of roll is listed clearly on the Dice Chart.

What Does Damage Do?

When a successful attack (seeking to inflict damage) is made, a defense roll is required by the attacker. This is done immediately after the success roll. Damage is deducted from the victim's damage track (1 Successful Hit = Loss of 1 Damage Track). Once the damage track reaches zero within a fight, that character is knocked unconscious. *ONCE UNCONSCIOUS, YOUR FATE IS IN THE HANDS OF YOUR ATTACKER. YOU MAY BE LEFT FOR DEAD, KIDNAPPED, IMPRISONED, OR KILLED AMONGST OTHER THINGS. THIS IS A NON-NEGOTIABLE RULE. DO NOT APPROACH A HOST FOR A REVERSE RULING.*

How Long Am I Unconscious?

You are unconscious while your attacker makes a closing post to the fight. The attacker is free to move your body to a prison, shackle you, leave you to bleed in the forest, etc. Once your fate has been determined, you are free to wake and begin healing.

How Long Until I Am Fully Healed?

Damage tracks will be restored fully after 24 hours of real OOC time. After this 24 hour period, it is possible you show bruising or cuts that are merely aesthetic and do not affect your overall health level.

How Do I Increase My Character Level?

Time spent roleplaying in the chatroom equates to character experience. For example: Level 1 Characters must be involved in active roleplay within the chatroom for a certain number of predetermined hours (listed on the Dice  Chart) before leveling up to the next level. The more advanced the character, the greater the hours required before leveling up.

How Do I Report My Hours?

Please make sure to keep your own logs and ensure your chat settings show the timestamp on those logs. Each log should be posted on the forum (http://mithrendainrpg.freeforums.org) under the 'Logs' section. At the top of the post, please indicate how many hours are shown as active RP for your character in the log. The GMs will keep track of the accrued hours, updating character stats as additional logs are submitted.

Forum activity does count towards experience and leveling up. Please visit the forum for details on this method of gaining character experience.

Example Of Dice Use

Note: Your character is allowed one free movement (basic movement like stepping or spinning) and one attacking/defending action. The dice roll applies to the attacking/defending action only (putting a knife to someone's throat or blocking the incoming the blade with the barrier of a forearm against the attacker's forearm).

Example (In Purple) and Explanation (In Black):

<Sam> *Sam steps into Linda, extending his right hand towards her throat. It was the glint of metal that would likely catch her eye, revealing the blade intended to press against her jugular and offer him the dominant advantage over her immediate fate.*

<Sam>roll d100

<dicebot> Sam rolled : d100 --> [ 1d100=32]{32}

At this point, Sam succeeded in this attack. He knows this because he is a Level 4 character and, according to the Dice Chart, Level 4 characters need to roll a number between 1-40 to succeed. Reference the 'Dice Chart' for the range that applies to your character (Level 1, 2, 3, etc).

Because Sam succeeded, Linda will need to roll defense prior to posting her paragraph response. She would respond as follows:

<Linda>roll d100

<dicebot> Linda rolled : d100 --> [ 1d100=56]{56}

Oh no! Linda is a Level 1 character (because she hasn't registered on the website), and needed to roll between 1-30 to defend herself! As a result, the knife will find itself at her throat and she is expected to include this in her paragraph response to the attack. She has also lost one out of her two available damage tracks. Once she loses both of her damage tracks, she is unconscious.

<Linda> *Before her vision could adjust to the onslaught of motion, she soon found the column of her neck exposed to the cold reality of the blade's edge pressing in against that pumping vein of her throat. She had very few options for retaliation, her hand snapping into place against Sam's wrist in an effort to limit the range of motion for the blade. "You are a fool to openly threaten a daughter of the House of Kadar." Oh yes, Sam was soon to make the unfortunate discovery of the Kadar ability: fire magic. The flesh of his wrist would begin to feel the damnation of that scorching heat...caustic..violent....releasing to cauterize and melt his skin lest he retract his blade from her throat and break the connection.*

Linda honored the attack due to her failure to defend. She is now free to retaliate with a basic movement (hand to Sam's wrist) and a targeted attack (fire magic to his wrist). In order to determine if she has succeeded in this fire magic, she will need to roll her offense roll.

<Linda>roll d100

<dicebot> Linda rolled : d100 --> [ 1d100=18]{18}

Linda succeeded in her attack. She needed to roll a number between 1-35, and succeeded with 18.  Guess what? It is now Sam's turn to roll defense. Sam is expected to honor what has happened prior...including damage to his wrist from Linda's fire magic.

At this point, the process repeats between the characters until there is surrender, imprisonment/disarming, or the character hits 0 damage tracks. Once a character reaches 0 damage tracks, they are knocked unconscious.

YES, YOUR UNCONSCIOUS CHARACTER CAN BE KIDNAPPED, RESTRAINED, OR KILLED AMONGST OTHER THINGS WHILE UNCONSCIOUS. SUCH IS THE WAY OF COMBAT AND CONFLICT, DEAL WITH IT.
